Core Roofing SystemsExpect Great, Good is not Enough

Coal Tar Pitch

Coal Tar Pitch membranes are comprised of roofing grade coal tar, roofing pitch, and reinforcing felts or plies. Due to its inherent waterproofing and weathering characteristics, Coal Tar Pitch roofing systems are the time-proven roofing system for 'dead' level and low-sloped roofs.

Coal Tar Pitch begins as a liquid/semi-solid, and must be poured before application. For this reason, its application is limited to level and low-sloped roofing surfaces. This membrane has a relatively low softening point, so it must include a gravel surface. Gravel protects the roof from Ultra Violet rays, traffic, and wind-uplift. Gravel also helps to reduce surface temperature, preventing the coal tar surface from burning upon installation.

Coal tar is not only naturally resistant to water, but also resistant to air and water vapor penetration, making it impervious to standing water and even pooling. Because of this membrane's low softening point, on warmer days, the coal tar will actually flow allowing the membrane to self-heal of minor cracks and punctures. Although coal tar pitch cannot be used on sloping and non-level roofs, it is the premier choice in roofing membrane for level and low-sloped roofs that must stand against water, traffic, and harsh conditions. Not only is it one of the strongest and most resilient roofing systems, it also lasts the longest and can perform under the harshest conditions.
